Axios|SurveyMonkey poll: the gig economy

Axios|SurveyMonkey poll: the gig economy

The so-called "gig economy" is disrupting the way we work today, but a new Axios|SurveyMonkey poll finds that a majority of people would still prefer to have one stable job rather than multiple, flexible jobs.

  • A large majority of people say they would prefer to have one stable job instead of more than one flexible job (79 vs. 19 percent).
  • While most people (70 percent) view gig economy jobs to be equally respectable as traditional, stable jobs, they are conscious of the wage and hour disparities that gig economy workers face:
    • Nearly half of people (48 percent) think gig economy workers earn less than their traditional economy counterparts who do similar tasks.
    • Fewer, 36 percent, think they earn about the same amount of money, and just 12 percent think they earn more.
  • For all the talk of the gig economy’s disruption of the workforce, nearly half of people in the U.S. (47 percent) say they “almost never” interact with people working gig economy jobs, while fewer than one in five (18 percent) interact with gig economy workers “often.”
