Axios|SurveyMonkey poll: in-person shopping still beats online retail

Shopping malls aren't dead yet. A new Axios|SurveyMonkey poll finds that even though consumers shop more frequently online, they still prefer in-person shopping, especially for necessities like groceries and toiletries.

  • More than a quarter of people (27%) buy things online at least once a week.
  • 66% of people make purchases at a shopping mall only a few times a year or less.
  • 71% of people with household incomes under $50,000 prefer to buy things in a physical store, compared with 54 percent of people with household incomes of $100,000 or more.
  • 91% of people prefer to buy groceries in a store.
  • Price matters the most to consumers. For 39% of people, price beats out quality, uniqueness, sustainability, and convenience as the factor that contributes the most to their purchasing decisions.
