When Are People Most Likely Completing Surveys?

Did you know that every month, over 30 million people complete SurveyMonkey surveys? Yep, that’s right. But, when exactly do all of these people take their surveys? It’s our job to help you make better decisions, so to help us help you get your survey results faster, we took a look at that when factor. We looked at what day of the week people completed surveys and also at the time of day.

If you were to make a guess, do more people tend to take surveys on weekdays than they do weekends? If you said yes they do, then pat yourself on the back, my friend! Weekdays do have better response rates than weekends based off of the data we collected. People just aren’t on their computers as much over the weekend in general so taking online surveys tends to not be #1 on peoples’ To-do lists.

What’s interesting to note however is the rise in response rates on Friday. This seems to indicate that along with the last crunch of weekday work that needs to get finished before the weekend, completing online surveys is one of those things that people like to cross off their list before heading out of the office.

Here’s a look at what we discovered. By the way, all of the data below is set in Pacific Standard Time (GMT-8) for domestic surveys and for all collector types.

When looking at each day, we saw that weekdays have a similar pattern–very low survey response rates in the earlier hours, then starting at about 4 AM PST (7 AM EST) to about 1 PM, response rates start to increase and go as high as above 70%. Declines in rates begin to happen slightly after each succeeding hour.

Note that Sunday starting later in the evening at around 5 PM has the biggest spike in responses. Here’s the breakdown:

And don’t forget Saturday! Here, the hour of that day doesn’t seem to matter as much as response rates are (predictably) lower overall:

Naturally, we monkeys would love to take surveys all day, every day if we could, but we know that’s not possible for anyone to do. We hope you found this breakdown of when people do tend to take your surveys not just interesting information, but that it helps you figure out when to launch your next survey project.

    This is interesting, but were you able to take into account closing dates for survey completion? I would imagine that many users might choose a Friday, which could affect your results.

  • It seems like the hour analysis isn’t adjusted for time zone. What about local surveys in, say, the Netherlands? What would be your recommendation in terms of time of day?

    Good to know and will be able to encoperate this next time round. How ’bout relating response times to when the survey request went out? In other words, how long did the request sit in their in box before it was completed? What’s the turn-around time?

    Very interesting info. As I primarily work 2 jobs online mostly during regular working hours M-F 7am- 5pm central time so I get up about1 be early and take surveys then when homework assistance for sophomore son is done I then go back to surveying about 9pm until 1am. Am I obsessed or normal? LOL

    Potentially useful information-thanks. Can you clarify how you calculated response rates, though? I’m not 100% clear on the correct interpretation of these data. For instance, do the data suggest that on average, 75% of respondents who complete a survey do so on a Friday, whereas an average of 44% complete their survey on a Saturday? But then wouldn’t the percentages add to 100 across the seven days?

    I’ve found Friday to be a good response deadline, which I typically extend with an email reminder on that Friday morning.

    Very useful data. I am about to make a survey for a French restaurant called La Creperie in Saigon. I am not sure if Asian user’s behavior stay the same as in this breakdown. Any ideas?

    Thanks for this interesting blog. I’d like to get clarification on one point. The first graphic on ‘Response Rate by Day of Week’ is showing the days on which people tend to respond, with Friday being the day when most people respond. Correct?

    If I take into consideration another post in the SM blog about days of the week to send surveys (, is the takeaway that people are most likely to complete a survey if they’ve received it on a Monday, and will most likely fill it out on a Friday?

      Glad you found the blog insightful, it’s one of our favorites! You are correct, we found that Fridays people tend to get to surveys that they’ve been putting off during the week. Of course, this was a case study, and is the most likely outcome we found!

          Thanks! So it does look as though both blogs state that M-F, during working hours, are the best times to send your surveys out. The key is to getting your surveys sent out at the start of the week! We see that when surveys are sent out on Fridays, they tend to get a lower response rate since this is leading into the weekend. If you send the survey out at the start of the week, respondents are more likely to answer! I hope that helps, Gal :)

    Really interesting… I wonder what the breakdown would be if you looked at paid vs. unpaid research… I know a lot of survey traffic is internal or non-incentivized surveys. One might be more inclined to complete a for-work survey on during the work-week than one that they’ll be personally compensated for.

      Great thought, Bela. The points you’ve made here are certainly something to be considered. While we don’t have the data accessible behind these questions, it’s a great question to ask! A survey that is work related will very likely be answered at a higher rate during the work week and on work hours. If you do your own study on this, please be sure to share the results.
