SurveyMonkey Integrates with MailChimp
default_NEW

Surveys and email marketing go hand in hand. Now, two of your favorite online primates, SurveyMonkey and MailChimp are holding hands to make life easier for all. With the launch of our API integration, you can easily populate a MailChimp email campaign with a SurveyMonkey survey for fast, reliable responses from your email list.

How does it work?

As you create an email campaign in MailChimp, select one of SurveyMonkey’s templates during Step 3 of the Campaign Builder process. There are three pre-designed templates for you to choose from–you can further customize them to meet your needs.

The first time through, you’ll be prompted to authorize MailChimp to connect with your SurveyMonkey account.

This lets MailChimp find the relevant survey to include in your email template.

After you have given MailChimp permission to access the surveys within your SurveyMonkey account, you will be prompted to select which survey to include in your email campaign.

Your survey will now be connected to your email template so that response data coming back in to your survey can be automatically connected to all the other great data in MailChimp on who opened your emails, who clicked, who forwarded, and who loves you. As our friends at MailChimp like to say, “Eep! Eep!” which in simian speak is, “this is fabulous!”

If you don’t already have a MailChimp account, get started here. And while you’re there, check out this awesome and detailed post from Ben at MailChimp with step-by-step instructions from the MailChimp side (and a cool diagram that includes monkeys holding hands. Awww, so cute!).

We’d love to hear how you use this new integration to help take your emails and surveys to the next level. Please share your examples and stories in the comments below.

  • Nice

  • Ashley

I enjoy using both services, but if i connect them will anyone who uses SurveyMonkey have access to my MailChimp as well?

  • Awesome! If only all primates got along so well.

Or is this…. wait a minute… this is the beginning of the Rise, isn’t it? YOU MANIACS! YOU MASHED IT UP! OH, DARN YOU! GOSH DARN YOU ALL TO HECK!

  • Hi Kate, all sounds really helpful and interesting for future projects! One question I do have is whether or not you will be able to see who exactly has said what. The company I work for, Project::4, is an events agency, and we are interested in using surveys for feedback purposes after events. If people give feedback, we often would like to contact them in order to communicate further about their concerns/problems/issues/likes/dislikes etc. Will this be possible or are responses anonymous?

    Many thanks

    Jon Harvell

  • Azhagarasan Annadorai

is this integration possible with basic/free account?

    • Hi Azhagarasan–Yes, integration is possible with our Basic/free plan. We’d love to hear how you end up using both tools together!

  • Nasser Munyagwa

Is mailchimp included as a service in the “Free” version of SurveyMonkey or only if you pay a fee for the advanced version of SurveyMonkey? I only have the free SurveyMonkey.

    • Hi Cindy–Yes, MailChimp integration is included with our free plan. Let us know if you need more information!

  • This is freaking awesome addition! I am excited!

  • Kamran

I have a gold account with SurveyMonkey. Is there an additional fee charged for using this new integrated feature (MailChimp) on my existing account?

  • Christina

I would like to feature the survey on my website and anyone that enters would have their email address automatically entered to MailChimp. Is that a possibility?

    Thanks!

    • CHristina –

Thanks for your comment. This is a great idea. Unfortunately, it’s not an option that exists right now, but it’s an integration that is on the team’s radar. We’ll keep you posted as more MailChimp features are rolled out.

  • malonegerald

Good business idea ! I would be happy to work with this team.. but .. I have’nt money to invest in this business. ..Certainly in the future …

    • Hanna J

Hi Gerald – Thanks for your comment! We appreciate the support. Blog love is another great form of investment in our book! Thanks.

  • Paul

If you send to a list of emails imported into SurveyMonkey, you can later resend to everyone who hasn’t responded yet. Is there a way to do that if you use Mailchimp?

  • This excellent website truly has all of the information I wanted about this subject and didn’t know who to ask.

Does Survey Monkey harvest email addresses that I use from my current account list? This is something I do not wish to share.

    • Kayte K

Hi Jimmy, thanks for the question and don’t worry, we do not harvest email addresses!

  • Mica

    Hi SurveyMonkey,

I have gone through the step described in the article you mention above, and looked at a couple of youtube videos, but the integration isn’t working for me. I have created the study, then created the campaign, the used a SurveyMonkey template, connected it and clicked on the study I wanted to use, but instead of importing that study, the content doesn’t change from the “Company X” and “We need your feedback” content. I don’t know why the 2 are not synching?
    Thanks, Mica

  • Great feature but having a big problem. Used it and got my MailChimp newsletter ready to go then realized I had selected the wrong survey. Went back to re-do but it cannot find my survey now. Have looked in help for answers but no luck. Any ideas what to try?

  • James Hinchcliffe

Hi. Can this work the other way around? For example, if someone fills in a survey and leaves their email address, can this be transferred to MailChimp to build-up your email lists from your survey returns?
    Thanks.

  • kaytek

Hi James! Yep. Here are 2 resource links from our pals over at MailChimp that should give you all the info you need: http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/setting-up-your-surveymonkey-mailchimp-integration

  • Karlyn Percil

Hello I sent a survey using this integration and for some reason the email list I sent it to couldn’t open the survey. What do I need to edit?

    • kaytek

Hi Karlyn, we’d love to help. Could you please send our support team a note at support@surveymonkey.com? They can take a peek for you. Expect a response within an hour or two during regular business hours. Thanks!

  • t-657

we just used this integration for a campaign. seems there’s no way to match the email address to the response without manually clicking back and forth from mailchimp to surveymonkey, one response at a time. this is extremely cumbersome! email addresses aren’t displayed in reports exported from surveymonky either.

surveymonkey does not capture email addresses from mailchimp, and mailchimp does not capture the actual responses??

how are we supposed to properly analyze the data?

seems a key part of this integration does not exist.

please let me know how i can properly analyze my responses and match them to the person / email address without having to click into each response one by one.

    thanks for your help.

    • kaytek

      Hello,

First, apologies for the delay in response. The current integration doesn’t provide what you’re looking. We want to make sure that we’re clear on your question however and with what you’re trying to accomplish. Do you want to see the results of groups of people (filtering on the email addresses)? MailChimp support might be a better place to start with requests for enhancement with their product: http://kb.mailchimp.com/home

      Thanks!

      • t-657

hi – yeah, I’ve been in touch with mailchimp & surveymonkey support multiple times over the past week, and neither party has a solution.

  • Mike Maginn

I have tried several times to make this integration work. The surveymonkey survey simply doesn’t show up in the mailchimp design step of the campaign builder. Instead I get a generic Company X filler. Double checked everything and Support is not very clear.

    • KTsurveymonkey

Hi, Mike! Sorry to hear you’re having some issues with the MailChimp integration. It sounds like you may be trying to launch via MailChimp instead of SurveyMonkey? You will need to create the survey collector from SurveyMonkey, but you’re right, it can get a little sticky. You will need to be sure to not have any other collectors created. If you get stuck, feel free to reach out to support here: https://help.surveymonkey.com

      • Shari Mahon

        Hello–

When you say “You will need to be sure to not have any other collectors created.” Does this mean that we can’t send a survey via email while also having the survey embedded into a web page?

        • KTsurveymonkey

          Hi Shari,

The integration does works in a manner in which it does need to be the first collector you create. In other words, you are welcome to also create an Embed Collector, however, if you also want to use MailChimp, you will need to create this collector first. You can do so by clicking the “Next” button on the Design page, then you will see the MailChimp option in the bottom right, as shown here: http://awesomescreenshot.com/0b43f93x19.

This option won’t show if there are other collectors on the account unfortunately. We are working on making this function much better in the near future!

  • Michael Manning

      Hey Michael-

Are you still having this issue?

      Katie

i am intergrate surveymonkey on my website but i have some problem …anyone please help me,

  • Guntis Urtans

Hi, I have used MailChimp – Survey Monkey integration some time ago and it worked well. Decided to use it again and got empty Survey list when creating campaign or tried Test Connection in Mailchimp integration setup. Disconnected and Reconnected again – the issue remains. Please help

    • MFsurveymonkey

      Hi Guntis,

It sounds like your MailChimp account is not linked to your SurveyMonkey account anymore. You will first want to make sure that it is the case in [My Account].

If you are still having trouble, you can reach out to support here:

  • Kimberly Headley

If I send out a survey for things like birthdays and that kind of info, will it auto-populate into mailchimp?

  • Mike Herrling

Hi, I successfully connected SurveyMonkey and MailChimp. I have created a nice survey. At theend, I ask if people want to join our newsletter. Thus, I would love to send Namen Email to the Mailchimp list. I cannot find this feature anywhere. o you have a manual for this?

    • MFsurveymonkey

Hi Mike! Good to know you’re using our integration with MailChimp. I hope it’s been useful!

As for your question, at the moment SurveyMonkey doesn’t have a direct export/import option for your stored data from your SurveyMonkey account to MailChimp. What you could do is export your contacts to an Excel file within SurveyMonkey and then import them into MailChimp.
      More about this here: http://help.surveymonkey.com/articles/en_US/kb/XLS-Exports

On MailChimp’s web page you can also review the following link on how to import data from Excel:
      http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-do-i-create-and-import-my-list

I hope this allows you to do what you’re looking for Mike!

      • Mike Herrling

Thanks for your reply. It was not the answer, I hoped for, but I will learn to live with it :D Maybe that would be an excellent update to your services. Thanks again.

        • MFsurveymonkey

Sure thing Mike! We’ll mention your request to our product development team. Thanks for the feedback :) Happy surveying!

  • Cowork Inc

Hi there. Are we able to kick off a survey as part of a Mailchimp automated worflow? Our use case is that when a member of our coworking hub signs up, they get a drip fed induction email series via Mailchimp, and we’d like to tack on a survey at the end of that. We can obv just paste in the survey link to the final email, but it would be good if there was something a bit more integrated, so the survey response could be tied back to the MC subscriber

    • MFsurveymonkey

Hi! This is a great question! Although you can view who completed the survey (and their response) in MailChimp, we don’t record the email address associated with the MailChimp list that distributed the survey.
It seems that a good alternative here would be to use Custom Variables. This is a versatile way to tie information from your database into the survey responses, and this would be possible to each respondent. For more information on Custom Variables and how to use them, please check out this great article on the topic: http://help.surveymonkey.com/articles/en_US/kb/What-are-custom-variables-and-how-do-I-use-them

      • Cowork Inc

I will check that out, but just to confirm, if we include a standard SurveyMonkey survey URL in a Mailchimp mail template (which for us will be as part of a Mailchimp workflow), that response will be tied back to that subscriber?

        • MFsurveymonkey

Hi again! Not exactly. Allow me to clarify! Custom Variables is a logic feature that allows you to track data about respondents by passing values through a survey link and into your survey results. This would then show up in your SurveyMonkey account, on the Analyze results page. I hope this would work for what you have in mind as well.
You might want to check with MailChimp support if they would be able to provide something along those lines as well.

  • Sheerin Naseem

    Hi there,

Im looking forward to using this feature with my mailchimp account. However, a small query.. Does integrating surveymonkey adds up to my monthly bill of mailchimp account?

    • MFsurveymonkey

Hi Sheerin! Thanks for your interest! Although we’re joining forces, we’re still separate platforms so the account you have with MailChimp is in no way linked to us in terms of payment, and vice-versa. If you don’t have an account with us yet, feel free to create one! More here: http://help.surveymonkey.com/articles/en_US/kb/Upgrading

We hope you have fun (more fun than a barrel of monkeys) with our integration!

  • Nathan John

Hi – looking at creating a survey that can unsubscribe customers in mailchimp, whilst also populating an excel sheet to unsubscribe customers from other marketing methods. Is there a way we can have the surveyu unsubscribe customers from mailchimp through the API integration? Any help/documents/resources on how to do this would be greatly appreciated!

  • LWOLewis

I just went through this, but I can’t see all of my surverys in the template option, there’s only a drop down of about 5 (I have about 20 on my account), any idea why this might be?

    • MFsurveymonkey

Hi there! This sounds like something our amazing support team could help you with, as we would need access to your account to investigate further.
Please reach out to them here: http://help.surveymonkey.com/contact
      Thanks!

      • LWOLewis

        Will do, thanks

  • MFsurveymonkey

Hi! Marbella! Since it seems it’s not displaying in MailChimp, I would recommend reaching out to their support team so they can take a look at that for you: https://mailchimp.com/contact/support/
