SURVEY BASICS: LESSON 1 of 7
Est. 5 min
You have a real curiosity or an important business question you need answered. The energy is there and your passion is your superpower. But here's the trick: keeping that great energy focused so you get clean, targeted insights.
Designing a survey starts with clarity. Before you type a single question, you need one clear goal. That's the foundation of every strong survey—and it's the first survey design best practice that separates great surveys from overwhelming ones.
Every strong survey starts with one clear goal—a core survey design best practice that shapes everything that comes after. This lesson guides you to define exactly what choice your data will support and what you want to be able to report on, before you write a single question.
When you know the answer to: "what story do I hope to tell?" your questions start to write themselves. You'll understand survey methodology, choose the right question types, and set yourself up for data you can actually act on.
EXPERT TIP
The best surveys ask one important question exceptionally well. Decide what you want to learn first, and every question becomes easy to write and easy to act on.

Let's write your survey goal. Start by writing it as one clear sentence or question—then jot down what you'd need to learn to answer it.
For example: "Is my coffee shop selling the right assortment of donuts?" From there, think about what would actually help you answer that. Which donuts do customers buy most often? Which do they like most, and least? Would anyone be disappointed if we stopped selling the ones with sprinkles? Notice how naming what you want to know starts turning your goal into questions. This is one of the most important parts of survey design.
