About this inquiry

On 5 August 2020, the Education Amendment (Parental Rights) Bill 2020 was referred to Portfolio Committee No. 3 – Education for inquiry and report.

The bill seeks to enshrine in law the principle that parents – not schools – are primarily responsible for the moral, ethical, political and social development of their children. If enacted in law, the bill would stop New South Wales schools from providing instruction on ideologically-based and political material that is inconsistent with the wishes and values of parents.

In particular, the bill seeks to prohibit the promotion of gender fluidity in schools, including through course development and continuing professional development of the State's teachers.

Detailed information about the bill, including its explanatory note, can be found here.

Information about the inquiry, including the terms of reference, can be found on the committee's website.

As part of the inquiry, the committee is seeking the views of interested individuals via the following questionnaire. Responses to the online questionnaire close on 28 February 2021.

Responses may be used in the committee's report. Names and contact details of respondents will not be published.
