These two committees are special committees. They have been formed by the ALA National President at the request of standing committees and ratified by the National Executive Committee. A special committee is a temporary committee formed for a specific purpose and exists until either a) it  presents a final report to the governing body or b) until the conclusion of the National President's term at the 2021 National Convention unless reappointed by the next president.

Inclusion & Diversity Special Committee:  The Strategic Planning Committee recommended the formation of this committee. There is a need to expand our membership to be more reflective of the armed forces we serve and for our leadership to be more reflective of the membership. The goals of this special committee are to 1) establish a method of determining the demographics of our organization (a baseline) and a process for obtaining this information from future members; 2) identify which demographics we want to measure; 3) identify needs and/or areas of concern; 4) establish goals and strategies for inclusion and diversity for the ALA; 5) provide opportunities for our members to participate in discussions on inclusion and diversity topics;  6) address policies or practices affecting inclusion and diversity; 7) create a transparent process for the selection of member leadership protecting against unconscious bias; 8) establish mechanisms for measuring success and hold leaders accountable; and 9) procure buy-in and support.

Code of Ethical Conduct Special Review Committee Objectives: The Constitution & Bylaws Committee recommended this special committee be formed when an evaluation of the wording of the current Code of Ethical Conduct in the National ALA Constitution, Bylaws, and Standing Rules revealed that the entire NEC--all 63 members--are the only members empowered to handle allegations, investigations or discipline of national officers and committee members. This special committee will 1) review the current code; 2) recommend clarifications or substantive changes to the code; and 3) recommend a process to enforce the revised Code of Ethical Conduct.
