Tuesday-Wednesday, June 4-5, 2024
Embassy Suites by Hilton Las Vegas, 4315 University Center Dr., Las Vegas, NV 89119

This year’s NSHE Mentoring Institute: Value, Challenges, and Opportunities for Mentorship through Research Opportunities in Nevada Higher Education is an interactive, in-person mentor training for NSHE research faculty of all career levels, who mentor others, particularly in STEM research. The NSHE Mentor Institute is designed to provide resources, infrastructure and connectivity, to support research and workforce development in STEM. The goal of this mentor training is to accelerate the process of becoming an effective research mentor and building capacity at NSHE institutions, providing mentors the opportunity to learn about research mentorship and professional development and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of their peers. Mentors will develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive, research mentoring relationships—relationships that optimize the success of both mentors and mentees.

Participants will:
  • Identifying more equitable approaches for outreach to broaden student participation in undergraduate research.
  • Discuss the value of “tiered-peer mentoring” and the effectiveness of enabling students as mentors.
  • Discover strategies that foster equity and inclusion of diverse populations in research mentoring.
  • Connect with other NSHE institutions and colleagues.
