FY27 Budget Survey

Thank you for contributing to the annual budget process for the Town of Cornelius!

Your input will assist the Town Board and Town Manager in developing a fiscal year 2027 (FY27) budget that is responsive to the needs and preferences of the community. FY27 runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027.

Please note that the survey includes a series of optional demographic questions that will help the Town evaluate responses and improve future budget processes. Each person in your household is encouraged to complete their own survey.

The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete.
1.Please select the focus areas below that are a high priority to you.
2.Of the focus areas listed above, which three are your highest priorities?
The Town’s budget funds multiple departments and their services, including Public Safety (Police, Fire, 911 Communications, Animal Control), Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Public Works (Solid Waste collection and Stormwater), Administration, Planning, Finance, and Economic Development.

The Town’s budget also funds a wide array of expenditures. To provide you with some context, the following are real examples of budget expenditures:

  • Hiring full-time Firefighters to improve the Fire Department’s staffing levels.
  • Committing Town funds as a cost-share to obtain NCDOT road projects, such as widening West Catawba Ave. and improving the Catawba Ave./US 21 intersection.
  • Increasing salaries for Town Staff (Police Officers, Telecommunicators, Planners, Parks Maintenance Technicians, etc.) so they are competitive with the labor market, improving recruitment and retention of quality staff.
  • Construction of Nannie Potts Ln., which allows residents an alternative to/from US 21 without driving on Catawba Ave.
  • Stream restoration along the Upper McDowell Creek between the Willow Pond and Weatherstone areas.
  • Construction of the Caldwell Station Creek Greenway that connects Bailey Road Park to US 21.
  • Constructing public parking spaces in downtown to increase parking for festivals and programs.
  • Solid waste contract for the collection of residential garbage, recycling, and yard waste.
  • Purchasing software and equipment to protect the Town’s technology infrastructure from cyber threats.
  • Maintaining Town facilities, such as roof replacements, repairing sidewalks, and replacing ball field lights.
  • Purchasing equipment, such as Police bulletproof vests, Fire air packs, and security cameras.
  • Purchasing replacement Fire trucks, Police cars, and field-maintenance tractors.
The preceding departments and services are the extent of what the Town is able to control and manage. For Questions 2 - 7, please keep responses relevant to these items.
3.What types of services and projects would you like to see funded by the Town?
4.In what areas do you think the Town is spending more than it should, if at all?
5.Understanding that the Town’s budget is limited, what types of expenditures are most important to you?
6.If the Town’s existing revenues are not sufficient to pay for services and projects (similar to the preceding list of expenditures), are you supportive of a property tax increase?
7.Do you feel that the Town has been able to deliver quality projects and services in years past?
8.Please provide your email address if you are interested in providing additional feedback.
