Minnesota State Statute 138.053 refers to a pathway that allows counties, cities, and townships to provide financial support to their county and local historical societies. The statute says this is possible for organizations that are "affiliated and approved by the Minnesota Historical Society."

MNHS has used the following criteria to determine if an organization meets this definition:
1. The organization is a dues-paying institutional member of MNHS
2. MNHS Local History Services has a current copy of the organization's bylaws
3. The organization has had some form of contact with Local History Services in the last year (this can be phone calls, emails, newsletters, e-newsletters, site visits, etc.)
