As part of the 2023 omnibus tax bill, the legislature authorized a new aid for local governments to be used for public safety purposes. The aid was sent out to cities, counties, and tribal nations on December 26, 2023. Unlike Local Government Aid the new Public Safety Aid was not for a general purpose, though the language was written broadly to include various types of personnel, equipment, and other purposes as allowable uses.

Now that the aid has been sent out, the legislature is interested in receiving more information on how this aid is being spent. The authorizing language did not include any reporting requirements, so legislators reached out to league staff to ask cities what areas the public safety aid was spent on.
