Social Prescribing
supports health and wellbeing for people by connecting them with non-clinical, community-based services and activities. The process usually involves a referral from a healthcare practitioner that connects patients to a connector (e.g., a link worker), who then links them to appropriate community services.

Nature Prescribing (NatureRx) is a form of social prescribing. NatureRx, or green social prescribing (GreenRx), connects individuals to nature-based activities such as community gardening, land-based activities, and nature programs to improve their health and wellbeing.

These programs vary across Canada; some involve healthcare provider referrals, while others are community-led or allow self-referral. Importantly, a program does not necessarily have to use the term “social prescribing” to be considered a social prescribing program if it aims to achieve the same purposes of supporting individual and community health and wellbeing (Muhl et al., 2023). Nature prescriptions can range from physician-led park prescriptions to community health centre initiatives.
