The Understanding Home-Based Businesses project explores the characteristics and perspectives of home-based businesses in the Slocan Valley. This research is a critical first step toward better understanding how the Slocan Valley Economic Development Commission, the Slocan & District Chamber of Commerce, and other economic development stakeholders can best support these often 'hidden' businesses.  This research study will build on findings from the Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) project, administered in partnership with the Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute at Selkirk College.  For more information on the Regional BRE Program and to access the Slocan Valley BRE report please visit: www.cbrdi.ca/bre.

For the purpose of this study a home-based business is considered to be any business entity selling products or services, run by a self-employed person, with or without employees, and operating on either a part-time or full-time basis from a residential property.

Survey Monkey is the online tool that is being used to collect survey responses. This company is located in the United States, and subject to privacy laws. We will not ask for personal identifiers, and no connection will be made between your data and your computer’s IP address. Your information as it is transmitted over the Internet will be protected by an enhanced security mechanism. If you choose to fill out the paper form instead of using the online tool, your sealed envelope will be transported to the RDI, whose researchers will enter your data into the master database. No one outside of the RDI staff will see your completed survey.

All information provided from the survey will be kept confidential, used only for the purposes of this research study, and will not be used in any identifiable way. Only researchers at Selkirk College's Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI) will have access to individual responses.  All researchers at the RDI have signed confidentiality agreements. All electronic records from the survey will be kept in a secure environment. Raw, unidentifiable data may be used for future longitudinal analysis and/or for educational purposes.

Your participation is completely voluntary and you may refuse to participate or withdraw from the study at any time. The questionnaire will require approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. There are no risks that will be incurred as a result of your participation and no personal data will be collected. Submitting the online questionnaire indicates your consent to participate in this study. A copy of the research study will be made available at slocanvalley.com and slocanlakechamber.com.

Sincerely,
Leah Main, Chair
