Letter of Information and Consent

This project is designed to create a database of basic demographic and some personality questions (happiness, life satisfaction, identity, fantasy engagement, sexual orientation) that will permit the International Anthropomorphic Research Project (IARP; FurScience.com) team to contact participants for specific projects. For example, we often want to study groups that occupy unique identity markers in the fandom (e.g., artists, people with multiple fursona, greymuzzles, therians, females, LGTBQ, people with disabilities, new fandom members, long-time fandom members, wellbeing, bullying, gender and sexual orientation). We will ask you about your comfort level in being contacted (e.g., once per year, three times).

Your contact information will be housed separately from the data you provide on this survey. We will assign a participant number to your database information and contact information.

Each study that could result from participants in this database will undergo its own separate ethics application and will only be conducted with IRB approval. This data will only be used to identify participants of interest in future studies.

The only people who will have access to your contact information will be the founding members of the IARP (Drs. Roberts, Plante, Gerbasi, or Reysen). It is our ten years of relationship with the furry community that make a database like this possible. In the event that we partner with a researcher who would like access to our database, a full ethics review will be conducted through the University of Waterloo. One of Drs. Roberts, Marshall, Plante, Gerbasi, Reysen, or an ethics approved graduate student at the University of Waterloo will send you an invitation, and you may decide to participate or not in the study. At no time will we give out your contact information to anyone without your expressed permission.

In appreciation of the time you have given to this study, you can enter your name into a draw for 1 of 4 prizes. The prizes include a $25 gift card for Amazon. Your odds of winning one of the prizes depends on the number of individuals who participate in the study. We expect that approximately 1000 individuals will take part in the study. Information collected to draw for the prizes will not be linked to the study data in any way, and this identifying information will be stored separately, then destroyed after the prizes have been provided. The amount received is taxable. It is your responsibility to report this amount for income tax purposes.

When information is transmitted over the internet privacy cannot be guaranteed. There is always a risk your responses may be intercepted by a third party (e.g., government agencies, hackers). University of Waterloo researchers will not collect or use internet protocol (IP) addresses or other information which could link your participation to your computer or electronic device without first informing you.

Signing up for the database does not obligate you to participate in any future studies and individuals will not be removed from the database based on their decision to participate or not in studies. You may remove yourself from our database at any time with a written request emailed to Dr. Sharon Roberts at serobert@uwaterloo.ca.

By continuing with this survey, you are consenting to having your demographic information stored separately from your contact information.

Pre-tests of this survey indicate it should take about 15 minutes.

By giving your consent to enter this database, you are not waiving your legal rights or releasing the investigators or involved institutions from their legal and professional obligations.
