Beloved Community:

As you know, Root & Rebound's mission is to restore power and resources to the families and communities most harmed by mass incarceration through legal advocacy, public education, policy reform and litigation — a model rooted in the needs and expertise of people who are directly impacted.

As a response to the current pandemic, Root & Rebound will be providing support to formerly-incarcerated and system-impacted Californians and South Carolinians in financial need, offering gift cards for up to $100 to support our communities in dire need of basic necessities.

As background, Root & Rebound has maintained a modest client fund over the years to meet the emergency needs of clients in select circumstances, as we know that, without financial resources for basic necessities (food, clothing, medicine, shelter), people cannot survive. It has been our continued practice to prioritize the financial support of clients with the greatest need. As a community, we are looking to the state and federal government to offer support during this time of crisis, but are aware that expanded government assistance has not yet been made available and people are suffering today. Therefore–given this unprecedented national emergency–we have made the decision to open our client fund to anyone in California or South Carolina who is formerly-incarcerated and system-impacted in need of basic necessities. Although we do not have the resources needed to help solve the financial needs of all, we believe that the modest support we can offer will make all the difference to vulnerable community members during this time.

These questions are designed to help us contact and give gift cards to those in need as well as gauge the needs of applicants so that we can better support them. The funds we have are limited and we will continue our practice of prioritizing the needs of those with the most limited resources.

Amidst all the current uncertainty, fear and loss surrounding us, it is essential that we stay connected through compassion and mutual support. We believe in the power of our communities and have faith in our ability to come together to build safety nets for those who fall through the cracks. For us, the safety net we are creating also includes sharing critical resources and know-your-rights information on our Covid-19 Website page, continuing to provide critical legal advocacy to people in crisis, and advocating for release of people incarcerated and reentry supports at this time. It also has meant putting together and updated a list of national and regional employers and current job openings nationally and in the areas where we have offices, so that the communities we serve are aware of job openings and that many companies are, in fact, hiring. We will continue to keep both of these resources updated.

Reaching out to support our most vulnerable empowers all of us to facilitate change. We are continually honored to work with our communities and offer unwavering support during difficult times.

Thank you,

The Root & Rebound Team
