Downtown Sarasota, Main Street Complete Streets Vision Plan: 3 Concepts

The Main Street Complete Streets Project is an effort focused on transforming downtown Sarasota to better serve residents, visitors, and businesses.

We now need your input and ideas of how you want Main Street to look!

Three proposed concepts have been designed and are being considered for Main Street. Tell us how you feel about each, and let us know which you like best.
CONCEPT A

Concept A draws inspiration from the existing streetscape you see on Main Street today. This concept focuses on reinforcing the traditional character of downtown by building upon familiar materials, patterns, and forms.

Key elements include: The use of brick pavers paired with concrete, organized in a clear, orthogonal layout made up of squares and rectangles, and Traditional-style site furnishings and amenities complement these materials, creating a streetscape that feels classic, recognizable, and grounded in Main Street’s existing identity.
CONCEPT B

Concept B draws inspiration from Sarasota’s early architecture and some of the City’s most iconic buildings, such as the Sarasota Opera House and the Ringling Museum of Art. Unlike Concept A, which relies on more orthogonal geometry, Concept B introduces softer forms.

You’ll see increased use of arches and curvilinear geometry, along with paving patterns that reference the decorative motifs found in Sarasota’s historic buildings.
Together, these elements create a streetscape that reflects the City’s architectural heritage while offering a more expressive design.
CONCEPT C

Concept C draws inspiration from Sarasota’s downtown edge along the Bayfront and the natural movement of the coastline. The design references the ripple patterns created by waves as they meet the shore, including the soft, layered textures formed by water and sea foam.

This concept also takes cues from Sarasota’s iconic sunsets, particularly the views looking west along Main Street toward the Bay.

Together, these influences shape a streetscape that feels fluid, organic, and reflective of Sarasota’s coastal identity.
