The City of Markham, in partnership with the York Region District School Board, is taking part in a National School Streets pilot at Black Walnut Public School this spring. School Street projects are designed to reduce traffic near schools during arrival and dismissal times to support student safety, well‑being, and active travel (such as walking, cycling, or rolling).
This pilot project involves two phases:
- Phase 1 of the School Street pilot ran from May 19 – 29 and is now complete. This phase involved the closure of southbound travel lane to motor vehicle traffic on John Allen Cameron Street, limiting traffic to one-way (northbound) between Shady Oaks Avenue and the bus loop (south entrance) during pick-up and drop-off times.
- Phase two is happening from June 1 to June 12. This phase involves the full road closure of John Allen Cameron Street between Shady Oaks Avenue and the bus loop (south entrance). No motor vehicle access is permitted during closure times during pick-up and drop-off.
This survey is part of the evaluation of the pilot project. The information collected will help us understand current travel patterns and perceptions of safety and traffic around the school.
Some questions will ask you to think about different stages of the pilot, including a single‑lane closure and a full road closure. Please answer based on your experience.
