William F. Hayden Park Survey #2 (Public Survey)

"A Mountain for Everyone"

Thank you for taking the time to participate in a survey for William F. Hayden Park. Your input will help the City of Lakewood determine how to best serve current and future park users while preserving the park’s natural resources. Plan improvements are not funded currently; the William F. Hayden Park Plan is intended as a guiding document for park improvements for the next 10-20 years.

The Conceptual Trails Plan considers all phases of plan development along with feedback received from over 3,500 park visitors. The plan has received multiple revisions following community touch points over the last year to ensure it provides an appropriate balance between conservation and recreation. The next step in the planning effort is developing the William F. Hayden Park Draft Plan. The draft plan will be shared on the project page for community input this summer.

What you can expect to see on the revised Conceptual Trails Plan based on community feedback:

1. Trail alignments that are sustainable and preserve the mountain’s ecological resources
Trails are being rerouted, realigned, or closed to better protect wildlife habitats, reduce erosion, and avoid impacts to the most sensitive areas of the park.
2. A more connected and equitable trail network
The plan includes a refined system of trails and improved connections to provide more balanced access to different areas of the mountain.
3. Improvements to existing trails rather than major expansion
Trails are sustainably realigned, consolidated, and strategically widened in key areas (such as the base loop trail) to reduce conflicts and encourage equitable use. Overall trail mileage is similar to the mileage on the mountain visitors see today.
4. Designated-use trail areas to improve the park experience

A few areas of the mountain will include designated uses and features like a hiker bypass or a downhill mountain bike trail to improve safety and enhance the user experience.
5. A proposed base loop trail around the park
The revised plan will include a loop trail utilizing new and existing trails to circle the base of William F. Hayden Park.
6. General recommendations for amenities
The William F. Hayden plan will also include general guidance for features like benches or shade structures at trailheads.
7. Clear guidance on trail etiquette and management
The William F. Hayden plan will provide recommendations for signage and wayfinding, rules, and maintenance needs to improve the user experience and protect the park's natural resources.
