Does West Bridgford Need a Town Council?

Have Your Say!
Did you know West Bridgford is the only area in Rushcliffe without a Town or Parish Council?
We want to know whether residents think this should change.

Why are we asking now?
Other areas are already taking action ahead of possible Local Government Reorganisation. North West Leicestershire District Council is promoting town council status for Coalville, and Charnwood Borough Council is doing the same for Loughborough, to help protect local influence if larger unitary authorities are created.
With similar changes likely in Nottinghamshire, West Bridgford could lose even more local decision‑making power. We’re asking residents whether a Town Council is something they would like to see explored to ensure stronger, more local representation in the future.

A Town Council could give West Bridgford:
  • A stronger local voice
  • Elected representatives focused only on our area
  • Control over some local services and facilities
  • A say in how part of your council tax is spent locally
Right now, the West Bridgford Local Area Forum (WBLAF) represents the community, but it can only advise – it cannot make decisions.
What would a Town Council do?
Town and Parish Councils are the local tier of government. They can:
  • Manage parks, play areas and community spaces
  • Support events and local projects
  • Comment on planning matters
  • Apply for grants
Any costs would depend on what the Town Council chooses to take on. At present, West Bridgford residents pay a ‘Special Expense’ set by Rushcliffe Borough Council, but residents have no direct say over it. Currently, our total annual Council Tax bill (£2,500 for Band D) is mainly made up of County Council charges, with £162 to Rushcliffe Borough Council, and an additional £64 for West Bridgford ‘Special Expenses’. The Town / Parish Council charges range from £0 to £130 in the rest of the Borough, averaging at approximately £81.

Deadline: Monday 2nd March 2026

The short survey will help the WBLAF (West Bridgford Local Area Forum) decide whether to take the case for establishing a Town Council forward. If enough people support this proposal, we will organise a petition and submit it to Rushcliffe Borough Council in order for a formal consultation to take place.
