The Coweta County Board of Education is preparing to adopt new academic-year calendars for the
2027-28 and
2028-29 school years, and opened a previous public survey on this matter on October 1st. Following extensive public feedback from the first survey, the school system is releasing this second survey to gather additional public input on an alternate version of school calendars.
A significant majority of respondents to the initial survey indicated preference for Calendar Option 1, which closely follows the current Coweta academic calendar. But a large number of respondents also indicated interest in adopting a week-long Fall Break in October, as opposed to the current long-weekend Fall Break. The system is releasing this second survey - also open through November 1st - to solicit feedback on that proposal.
Two proposed calendars (the original Option 1, and a new Option 3) can be found
here, and in links below. This link opens a new page, where two calendar options can be found. Scroll down each calendar page to see both years under each option.
Both proposed calendars maintain 180 days of student instruction, divided into two 90-day semesters, (or as close to 90 as possible). The first semester must conclude before the start of holidays in December to allow for high school course completion and final exams prior to the Christmas and New Year's break, and concluding the school year on the Friday before Memorial Day. The calendars here try to follow the long-time convention of not beginning the school year prior to August 1, but one calendar proposal would start the student school year as early as July 31 in order to accommodate a proposed week-long fall break.
The school calendars in this survey include:
A Labor Day holiday (a Monday holiday)
An October holiday (a teacher workday following the first 9 weeks, and two versions of this break - a long weekend in Option 1, and a week-long fall break in Option 3)
A Thanksgiving holiday (full week)
A Christmas and New Year's holiday (roughly two weeks)
A Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. holiday (a Monday holiday)
A Mid-winter break in February (full week)
A Spring holiday in April (full week)
School-year end before Memorial Day
Two Teacher Work Days in March can also serve as possible inclement weather days in case of school closures that require student make-ups.
The first calendar option is similar to the system's current school calendar. The second option (Option 3, here) differs:
Option 1 – Closely follows the calendar used by the school system in recent years. A full week Thanksgiving Break, a Christmas and New Year's Break of two weeks, and a full week Winter Break, and a full-week Spring Break is scheduled. School starts Thursday, August 4 in 2027.
Option 3 – Differs by proposing a week-long Fall Break in mid-October, following a Friday Teacher Workday after the end of the first nine weeks. This break is created by taking two days from thew Christmas and New Year's Break, and starting the school year slightly earlier. School starts August 3 in 2027 and July 31 in 2028.
Take the short survey below to provide the school board with your preferences on these options and your thoughts on school calendars. Results from this survey and from the original survey will both be provided to the Board for their consideration.
