MORETTI, MERCER AND MARBLE
We appreciate your interest in Alabama Humanities Alliance's SUPER Program. This workshop -- to be held Tuesday, July 16, 2024 from 9:00am -2:00pm -- is a consideration of Italian artist Guiseppe Moretti, his creation of the cast iron statue Vulcan, and the Alabama resources that drew Moretti to work in the state in the early 1900s. Also discussed will be his longtime assistant, artist and Marengo County native Geneva Mercer.
Scholars for this workshop will be Graham Boettcher, PhD, R. Hugh Daniel Director at the Birmingham Museum of Art, and Ruth Beaumont Cook, author of MAGIC IN STONE: THE SYLACAUGA MARBLE STORY and other books.
Offered in partnership with Vulcan Park and Museum, the workshop will complement the exhibit Vulcan at 120: Birmingham's Iconic Iron Man. A tour of the exhibit is part of the workshop agenda. This event will take place at Vulcan Park and Museum, located at 1701 Valley View Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209. Workshop includes refreshments, lunch, materials and resources. Participating educators will receive a $100 stipend and 5 professional development credits.
