Simpcw First Nation has declared the Riviére au Shuswap (R.au.Sh) Valley as an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA), reaffirming our responsibility to care for this vital part of our unceded territory. The R.au.Sh Valley is a culturally and ecologically significant area within SimpcwúỈecw which our ancestors cared for since time immemorial.

IPCAs are lands and waters where Indigenous Nations have the primary role in protecting and conserving ecosystems through their own laws and knowledge systems. For the Simpcw IPCA, we are gathering community input, knowledge, and experiences to help guide the values and management of the R.au.Sh Valley.
The R.au.Sh Valley IPCA is an innovative expression of the inherent rights and responsibilities that Simpcw has to the land.

Protecting the R.au.Sh Valley means we can continue to practice our cultural activities—including gathering, fishing, and hunting—and share them with other communities in our territory.
