Experiences of violence and aggression against Emergency Department Staff

As part of our advocacy work on behalf of members, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine is collecting data on experiences of violence and aggression from patients and other members of the public against NHS staff in Emergency Departments.

The data collected will form part of the research used for our upcoming work with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Emergency Care, looking at how we can end violence and aggression against staff.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) definition of violence and aggression is “Any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work. This can include verbal abuse or threats as well as physical attacks.” However, we also see any form of discrimination and harassment as part of the working definition, so please do not feel bound by this definition in responding to this survey.

In completing this survey, please do not give us any identifying information. We want this survey to be anonymous and any of the material used in a report will honour that.

If you have experienced violence and aggression in carrying out your work, please follow the proper channels within your hospital trust to report it using the appropriate channels and processes .
