1. Introduction

As part of the project Steps2Scale NRW, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), a study is being conducted to support the establishment of a Biotech Scale-up Hub in NRW. This hub should be available for companies to scale-up their biotech processes to higher TRL and to produce sample volumes in relevant quantities. The proposed location for this hub is the Bayer site in Bergkamen, which already has sample fermentation capacities available.

A key component of this study is a comprehensive demand assessment, aimed at identifying both current and future scale-up and production demands within the biotechnology sector. The findings will provide an essential basis for defining the technical requirements and supporting the development of a suitable operating and management structure for the planned Scale-up Hub.

Participation in this survey is voluntary. You may complete the questionnaire either anonymously or by optionally providing your contact details at the end of the survey. If you choose to share your contact details, we will provide an exclusive executive summary of the survey results, as soon as the survey is completed.

The envisioned Scale-up Hub will focus on the scale-up of biotechnological processes in stirred-tank reactors, thereby addressing critical challenges in process development and industrial implementation.

The following definitions apply throughout the questionnaire:
  • Bioprocess: Whole Process - from feedstock to product including upstream processing, biocatalysis and downstream processing.
  • Biocatalysis: Biocatalytic/ Biotechnological process - either enzymatic catalysis or whole cell catalysis (fermentation).
The questionnaire is structured in 4 sections:
  • Section 1 gathers general information about your company and the process/ processes to be scaled.
  • Section 2 addresses process-specific requirements.
  • Section 3 focuses on market and regulatory aspects.
  • Section 4 explores future activities and development plans.

We sincerely appreciate your valuable input and thank you for contributing to this important initiative.
