The Local Government Commission is looking at whether changes are needed in Southland’s local government structure. We want to hear your views on the issues and opportunities you see for local government in the region.

Current structure

There are four Councils in Southland, these are:
  • Gore District Council
  • Southland District Council
  • Invercargill City Council
  • Southland Regional Council (Environment Southland)
These councils provide services and infrastructure that affect people across the region.

Why participate?

Share your perspective: Tell us what you think works well and what could be improved for your district and regional councils.
Reflect community priorities: Help us understand local identities, connections, and the issues that matter to your community.
Inform future considerations: Your feedback will contribute to the Commission’s assessment and any advice or decisions it may make.

How to get involved

1. Complete this survey (open until 22 April 2026).
2. Attend public meetings: Join us at online or in-person hui to discuss the issues and opportunities for local government in Southland. For our engagement schedule, please see our website
3. Stay informed: After April, we’ll publish our findings, including whether reorganisation is the right approach for Southland.
