Interactive Fire Circles are discussion sessions and/or working groups focused on advancing our understanding of fire ecology and management, in the form of 1) roundtable discussions, 2) small groups assembling position papers, white papers, policy pieces, management guidelines, collaborative peer-reviewed papers, and/or 3) other efforts to explore or synthesize existing data, discuss ideas, present scenarios or lead role-playing exercises.

The number of interactive fire circles is limited and submissions will be evaluated for inclusion based on likely degree of interest, uniqueness of topic, and whether it fits in the allowed times at the Fire Congress.  AFE will contact proposers of fire circles with similar topics or themes to determine if those proposals can be merged.  Organizers are not restricted to the theme of the Fire Congress, nor the main topics listed on the Fire Congress webpage, but we encourage such proposals.

Fire Circle coordinators can choose from 1, 2, 3 or 4 consecutive time blocks of 1 hour and 40 minutes each, which could be spread across two afternoons. Those that require multiple segments over several days will be considered as space/interest allows.  Organizers are allowed to use the time as they wish within the session, but must honor the afternoon break of 25-30 minutes.  Rooms will be configured in a roundtable style with 8-10 chairs at tables, and rooms holding 24-30 participants at three tables.

Those wishing to organize an interactive fire circle should submit their proposal by August 1, 2017.  Organizers will be notified by September 1, 2017 if their interactive fire circle has or has not been accepted.  Organizers and participants must register for the conference; registration costs will not be reimbursed by the conference. Organizers will be responsible for informing their known participants of acceptance or rejection.
