External Consultation Survey: Professional Boundaries and the Nurse-Client Relationship

Introduction

RNs have a professional accountability to provide safe, competent and ethical care. Professional boundaries are essential to supporting a safe, respectful and therapeutic nurse-client relationship. This resource is intended to support the professional practice of registrants of the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) by providing guidance on professional boundaries within therapeutic nurse-client relationships. Across all domains of practice and in every practice setting, RNs are responsible for establishing and maintaining professional boundaries with clients.
This resource:
· defines key components and concepts related to professional boundaries and the therapeutic nurse-client relationship;
· outlines principles required to uphold professional boundaries; and,
· provides expectations for maintaining professional boundaries and therapeutic relationships in practice.
Throughout this resource, the term nurse or Registered Nurse (RN) refers to Graduate Nurse (GN); RN; Graduate Nurse Practitioner (GNP); Registered Nurse with Additional Authorized Practice [RN(AAP)] and Nurse Practitioner (NP).
