Welcome to the EqualEngineers "Masculinity in Engineering" Survey 2024
Please read carefully before proceeding.
Content Warning: This survey contains questions regarding self-harm and suicidal feelings and ideation. These topics are handled sensitively, and all questions are voluntary. You may skip any question that you are uncomfortable answering.
Purpose of the Survey: Thank you for considering participation in this important survey. This marks the third iteration of our study, first conducted in 2018 and published in 2019, and revisited in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, published in 2022. The aim of the research is to explore evolving perceptions of masculinity, male identity, and engineering workplace culture.
Engineering and technology are male-dominated professions. We are interested in understanding how stereotypes about what an engineer looks like and how men are expected to behave influence workplace culture. We are also interested in exploring whether men feel included or excluded in efforts to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and whether a more diverse profession could benefit all, regardless of gender.
Why This Research Matters: Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK, with male construction workers 3.7 times more likely to take their own lives than the national average. This research seeks to understand whether engineering workplace culture contributes to this alarming statistic, and explore whether issues such as stigma, ‘macho’ culture and behaviour, or the inability to express emotion or vulnerability are barriers to creating more inclusive and supportive environments.
Voluntary Participation: Your participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. You may skip any questions or withdraw from the survey at any time without giving reason.
Anonymity and Confidentiality: Your responses will remain completely anonymous and confidential. No personally identifying information will be collected. Data will be stored securely and may be used by EqualEngineers or members of EqualEngineers staff for future comparative studies, ensuring that all data continues to remain anonymised.
Time Commitment: The survey should take no longer than 10-15 minutes to complete.
Support: If any of the topics discussed become distressing, we encourage you to access support through services such as Samaritans (116 123), or other mental health organisations local to your area.
Contact Information: This survey is conducted by EqualEngineers. If you have any questions about the research, please contact Poggy at Poggy.MurrayWhitham@equalengineers.com.
