Introduction

Creels
Survey Background and Purpose
This survey has been initiated as a scoping exercise by the Chairs of the Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups across Scotland. The need for such an initiative arose directly from feedback provided by numerous fishermen, who have voiced concerns regarding the necessity for more effective control over the number of creels currently being used in our inshore waters. Notably, these concerns were strongly reflected in the findings of the Interim Measures Survey that was previously conducted.

Confidentiality of Data
All information collected through this survey will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. Individual responses will not be disclosed or shared, ensuring the privacy of all participants.

Analysis and Reporting
Once the survey responses have been analysed, the key themes that emerge will be communicated to the Scottish Government. This process is intended to help inform and shape any future guidance or legislation that may be considered under their Inshore Fisheries Management Improvement (IFMI) Programme.

Structure
The first section of the survey looks at existing and historic schemes, while the second section seeks your opinions on future creel limits. This structure has been designed to ensure both past experiences and future aspirations are considered in shaping policy.

Important Note For Shetland
Commercial inshore shellfish fisheries, extending out to 6 nautical miles around the coast of Shetland, are managed by the Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO) under a Shetland Regulating Order. Consequently, certain questions posed to other regions of Scotland have been removed, as they are not applicable to Shetland waters.
