A community health project for Black African and Caribbean Lewisham residents
Did you know early kidney problems do not usually cause any symptoms? Without a check you wouldn’t realise there was anything to be aware of. Identifying kidney problems early means it’s possible to make the right changes to avoid things getting worse in the future.
Do either you or someone you care for have...
- kidney problems or concerns about kidney health?
- diabetes or high blood pressure?
...if so, we’d like to hear from you!
About this project
We're a partnership of community organisations and leaders, and local GPs, working together to improve kidney health in our communities, as part of Lewisham’s Health Equity Programme.
We know that Black African and Caribbean communities experience kidney problems at younger ages and face higher risks, yet often receive care that doesn't recognise cultural needs, or address the barriers that prevent early diagnosis and allow effective self-care.
We want you to shape what we’re creating together!
Tell us what you need
We’re reaching out to local community organisations, leaders and residents to understand what kinds of support would make the most difference, as we plan a programme of activities we’ll be delivering over the course of 2026 to improve the health of Black African and Caribbean Lewisham residents either living with or at risk of kidney disease.
Please take 10 minutes to complete the following short survey, to help us plan:
- Community information events where you can learn about kidney health in welcoming, culturally-appropriate settings;
- Ongoing wellbeing support programmes with peer learning, practical self-care approaches, and culturally-tailored guidance on kidney health;
- Sessions with healthcare professionals that meet you where you are, address the barriers you face in accessing care, and are adapted to your needs.
