Live Facial Recognition in Dorset

2.Please take a moment to read the information below before completing the survey.

Dear Resident,

As part of Dorset Police’s ongoing commitment to tackling serious crime and keeping our county safe, the Force is planning to introduce Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology.

Before this technology is used, I want to understand the views of the people of Dorset. Your feedback is important and will help inform how Dorset Police approaches the use of LFR in our communities.
Live Facial Recognition compares live camera images of faces against a predetermined police watchlist in real time. It is designed to help locate people who are wanted by the police or the courts.

LFR may be deployed in busy public areas for specific policing purposes, including:
  • locating individuals wanted for priority offences.
  • finding recalled prisoners or those who are wanted by the courts.
  • safeguarding and locating missing children or vulnerable people.
  • helping to prevent and deter crime.

When the system identifies a possible match, an alert is generated and reviewed by trained police officers. Any match must be verified by officers, and decisions are made in line with standard policing protocols before any further action is taken. Images that do not generate an alert are automatically, instantly deleted.

I would encourage you to find out more information about Live Facial Recognition on the Dorset Police website here.
