About this survey

The British Medical Association is conducting research to help us better understand the current experiences, terms and conditions of Locally Employed Doctors (LEDs) working in England and Northern Ireland. LEDs are a diverse and growing group, employed under various titles, and are not provided with national contracts but instead given local variations of such contracts, which can come with unique challenges.

Completing this survey will help the BMA to better support and represent LEDs If you are unsure whether you are an LED, you can find a detailed definition below.

This survey is open to all LEDs working for an NHS Trust in England or HSC Trusts in Northern Ireland (regardless of whether you are BMA member or not), and responses are entirely anonymous. We may wish to publish anonymous quotes from survey responses, and by filling out this survey you express consent to these quotes being used for this purpose. Please do not include anything that would identify yourself or any other individual.

All references to Health Services relate to the NHS in England and the HSC in Northern Ireland.

This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Please note that this time includes optimal equalities monitoring / demographic questions at the end of the survey.

Unsure if you are an LED?

For the purposes of this survey, you are considered an LED if you are not on either:
  1. A national resident doctor contract (i.e. not in a formal UK graduate programme with a National Training Number)
  2. One of the current or previous national SAS contracts listed below:
    • Specialist grade 2021 contract
    • Specialty grade 2008 and 2021 contracts
    • Associate Specialist grade 2008 or pre-2008
    • Pre-2008 contracts (including staff grade, senior clinical medical officers, clinical medical officer or hospital practitioner)
  3. A national consultant contract
You may have instead been given local variations of SAS or Resident doctor contracts which can range from mirroring the above contracts, to having very different terms and conditions. LED job titles may include the following, but are not limited to:
  • Clinical Fellow
  • Senior Clinical Fellow
  • Trust grade
  • FY3 post or equivalent
  • Locum Resident Doctors
  • Locum Consultants/Trust Consultants not on national consultant contracts
If the above sounds like you, then we encourage you to fill out the survey. Please do also share it with colleagues who may be LEDs.

More information about LED contracts and your rights to fair pay and working conditions can be found here.
