ASAM Tobacco Clinical Considerations Application

Individuals with non-tobacco substance use disorders (SUDs) experience disproportionately high rates of tobacco use and tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. The landscape of tobacco products and tobacco harm reduction (THR) strategies have evolved since the release of ASAM’s guidance on Integrating Tobacco Use Disorder Interventions in Addiction Treatment.

To address this gap, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) will be reviewing and analyze the scientific evidence on smoking cessation and THR approaches and updating our guidance for treatment of TUD in individuals with other SUDs. The writing group will conduct a comprehensive evidence review and help develop an evidence-informed clinical considerations report, peer-reviewed manuscript, and clinician-focused educational resources to translate the evidence into practical guidance for addiction treatment settings.

We are looking for experts to serve on the writing group, education faculty team, and as field reviewers.
 
Estimated Time Commitment
Writing group members can expect to commit 2-4 hours per month for calls and approximately 2-4 additional hours per month to review materials and draft content, for a total of 4-8 total hours per month between August and November/December 2026.

Education faculty members can expect to commit 3-4 hours per month between December 2026 and May 2027.

Field reviewers can expect to commit a total of 2-3 hours to review the draft document (estimated December 2026).

Project Timelines
The project is anticipated to begin in August 2026 and be completed by August 2027.
