Child Welfare Letter Regarding Aderholt Amendment

A letter from the child welfare community opposing the Aderholt Amendment in the House Appropriations for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services and Education is seeking sign on support from child welfare agencies. Sponsored by Congressman Robert Aderholt, the amendment is described as an attempt to promote religious freedom. It is based on legislation that has been offered in both houses of Congress. At its core, the amendment would punish states that are seeking to prevent discrimination against children and families. The letter explains the harms of the amendment to children and families including decreasing the number of potential foster and adoptive parents, and increasing the number unsuccessful placements due to discrimination against religion, sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI), and marital status. Furthermore, the letter explains how states federal funding would be cut if they choose to not discriminate. These types of cuts would greatly impact the services that agencies would be able to offer these vulnerable children and families. We are seeking for organizations to sign on in support of this opposition
