Essex municipal leaders and law enforcement have made a commitment to work with the community to address systemic racism and social justice in policing and municipal government.  As part of this work, the town will be holding listening sessions in September, followed by a series of planning sessions.  Your input on this anonymous survey will help Essex leaders engage with the community in a way that works for YOU. We are especially interested in making it possible for community members who have been underrepresented and most negatively impacted by policing to participate (i.e.BIPOC, people with low incomes, people with disabilities, and people from the LGBTQIA community).

The survey results will help shape our next steps. In the meantime, we want to let you know what you can expect.

  • Between now and the listening sessions in September, comments made during public meetings or sent to town officials will be gathered and incorporated into the listening and planning sessions.
  • Between now and the listening sessions in September, the Essex Selectboard, the Essex Police Department, and municipal staff have committed to doing their own work to build knowledge and awareness about systemic racism and bias, so they are prepared to engage in authentic and productive conversations with the community.
  • The listening and planning sessions will be facilitated by Tabitha Moore and Susan McCormack of Creative Discourse.
