Public Art in Leonardtown: What's Next?

Take a stroll through Leonardtown and you’ll see more and more public artworks – murals, artistic benches, sculpture. What’s next?

This fall the Town of Leonardtown will be developing a plan for public art, focusing on the Arts and Entertainment District and Breton Bay Greenway areas. Public art can be an important tool for the Town to continue enhancing the experience of Leonardtown for residents and visitors, and strengthening the Town’s ability to attract new businesses, development and visitors. Leonardtown is not alone; across Maryland, towns and cities of all sizes continue to bring art to their streets, through both local and state efforts.

This plan will build on the Town’s past success in implementing public art projects – success that has lead to new ideas and questions about future projects and locations. The Town wants to ensure that future projects are appropriate and consistent with the broader community vision.

The planning process will seek to spark additional public interest, help the Town learn what additional kinds of public art citizens and visitors would like to see, prioritize opportunities, consider partnership opportunities and suggest how the Town can take care of its artworks.

We will need your help! Look for news about public conversations, focus-groups and pop-up activities during the consultants’ visit to Leonardtown during September’s Art Walk. Meanwhile, while you’re waiting for that, you can take this community survey and share your ideas.
