This anonymous survey asks what you have experienced, seen, or been concerned about in Alberta related to civil liberties and human rights, and what would help. It is part of the Strengthening Rights, Building Belonging project by the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre (ACLRC), with funding support from the Calgary Foundation. Your answers will help shape our future public legal education, research, and support work.
Civil liberties and human rights are the rights and freedoms that belong to everyone. They set limits on what governments can do. They also protect you from discrimination at work, at school, and in housing. And they make sure everyone can get the supports and opportunities they need to participate fully in society, and a fair process when something goes wrong.
Before you start:
• Taking part is your choice. You can skip almost any question. You can stop at any time. The survey takes about 15 minutes.
• Your answers are anonymous. We do not ask for your name, and we do not record your IP address. We have no way to connect your answers to you.
• You cannot take your answers back. Because they are anonymous, we cannot find your response after you send it. Please only share what you are comfortable sharing.
• We report answers as group totals. We may also quote a few words from written comments. We remove anything that could identify a person before we publish.
• Where your answers are kept. We use SurveyMonkey, a US company, so your answers sit on US servers while the survey is open. They are anonymous and not connected to your name. When the survey closes, we move them to a secure University of Calgary system and delete them from SurveyMonkey. Only ACLRC staff on this project have access, and we keep the answers for future research and education.
• Who can take this survey. You must be 18 or older and live or work in Alberta.
• Some questions ask about difficult experiences. You can skip any of them. There is a list of places to get help at the end.
• If you need another way to take this survey. You can complete it by phone or in another format. If English is a barrier, contact Flora Stevenson (flora.stevenson@ucalgary.ca) and we will see what we can arrange.
• You can enter a draw for a $50 gift card. The draw is separate from this survey. When you finish, we will take you to a different form. That form asks only for your first name and email, and we use them only to contact the winner. Your name is never stored with your survey answers. Entering is voluntary, and we delete all contact information after the draw closes on October 12, 2026.
