About this consultation

The Waterborne Technology Platform is consulting the European waterborne sector on nine Technology Roadmaps implementing the Waterborne Technology Leadership document. The roadmaps cover maritime technology sector, port ecosystems, inland waterway transport, short sea shipping, ferries, cruise, oceangoing shipping, offshore vessels, and the blue economy. Each roadmap sets out a pathway for research, development, innovation, upscaling and deployment to 2035, 2040 and 2050, with the objective of supporting the competitiveness, resilience, sustainability and strategic autonomy of the European waterborne sector.
Purpose of the consultation

The consultation has a confirmatory purpose. Chapter 4 has been developed over three months of sector drafting; this open consultation gives the wider waterborne community a final opportunity to flag missing elements, propose targeted additions, and indicate expected impacts. Following processing the feedback, a table will be published on how feedback has been integrated in the final version, or not, and if so, why.
Structure of each roadmap

Each roadmap follows a six-chapter structure. The questions in this consultation are organised around the same logic.

Chapter 1 Description of the sector. Defines the segment, its scope, market characteristics and strategic role in the European waterborne ecosystem.
Chapter 2 Drivers and constraints. Identifies the policy, market and technology drivers and the structural constraints and bottlenecks shaping the segment.
• Chapter 3 Target capabilities. Sets the capabilities the segment must achieve by 2035, 2040 and 2050, as indicated in the Waterborne Technology Leadership document.
• Chapter 4 Technological pathways. Translates target capabilities into concrete RD&I, upscaling and deployment pathways.
• Chapter 5 Key enablers and deployment. Identifies the regulatory, financial, infrastructural, industrial and skills enablers required to move pathways from research to deployment.
• Chapter 6 Expected impact. Describes the economic, environmental, social and technological outcomes for the segment because of the implementation of the roadmap.
How to respond

One response per roadmap is requested; respondents active in several segments are invited to submit one response per relevant roadmap. The questionnaire takes approximately 20–25 minutes per roadmap. All substantive comments should ideally be supported by a source, which will then be integrated in the next version of the roadmap. Free-text fields are subject to the word limits indicated per question.
