Introduction to the 2018 EAHP Medicines Shortages Survey

The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) acknowledges the serious nature of the problems caused by medicines shortages, including threatening patient care in hospitals and overall patient safety.

For this reason, EAHP has been addressing the issue of medicines shortages over the years, culminating in a 2014 survey on medicines shortages, one of the first to be carried out on a European scale. The results of the survey provide an overview of the situation, as well as key challenges that need to be tackled. More information on medicines shortages can be found on the EAHP website HERE, and the 2014 Shortages Survey report can be downloaded HERE

Following up on the 2014 survey, EAHP considered it is time to have a fresh and updated overview of the medicines shortages situation in Europe, with a new and improved survey. This survey aims to provide a clearer picture on the impact of medicines shortages on hospital pharmacists. To this end the survey will investigate:

- the current nature of medicines shortages problems in Europe, including their prevalence;
- the most common types of shortages;
- their impact on patient care and hospital pharmacy services;
- existing national mechanisms for dealing with or monitoring shortages;
- how hospital pharmacists typically manage the problems shortages cause; and,
- hospital pharmacist views on proposed policy solutions.

We thank all hospital pharmacists for participating in the 2018 EAHP Medicines Shortages Survey, as your input is very valuable.
