Introduction

For more than a decade the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP), has been raising awareness about the problem of medicine shortage and its impact on patients in particular in the hospital environment. Five surveys were conducted by EAHP in 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019 and 2020. The results of these surveys have provided an overview of the severity of the problem as well as its impact on overall patient care.

The 2023 Shortage Survey seeks to investigate some of the reasons for shortages of medicines and medical devices in hospitals as well as the impact on patients. In addition, it aims at collecting solutions and best practices currently applied at the local, regional and national levels.

The survey targets hospital pharmacists, nurses, physicians, other healthcare professionals and patients.

This survey uses the definition for a ‘medicine shortage’ provided by the European Medicines Agency (EMA): ‘A shortage of a medicinal product for human or veterinary use occurs when supply does not meet demand at a national level’.

The survey will be closed at midnight on 30 April 2023.
