Online Self-Directed Workshop

Question Title

While the City of Vaughan continues to respond to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of citizens and staff remains the priority. As a result, the Local Off-Leash Dog Strategy Open House (originally scheduled for March 24, 2020) was cancelled. Public engagement is vital to the development of this strategy and the City is committed to providing active public engagement opportunities to residents.

The City recognizes the value off-leash dog parks bring to dogs and their families. To clearly understand and respond to the needs of residents, the City is continuing to identify locations to pilot local spaces for pets to roam leash-free. The outcome will be a Local Off-leash Dog Area Strategy that will identify pilot sites for off-leash dog areas and how these sites will be managed and maintained.

In December 2019, the City launched an online survey to learn more from Vaughan’s citizens about local off-leash dog areas. The survey, which closed July 13, 2020, received more than 900 responses. Thank you to everyone who participated.

To date, the City has:
  • Completed background research on best practices
  • Reviewed approaches taken by other cities in Ontario
  • Conducted an online survey for and held workshops with citizens and stakeholders
  • Reviewed more than 70 locations and identified the top eight recommended pilot locations
By participating in this online self-directed workshop, you will:
  • learn about the Local Off-Leash Dog Area Strategy and key findings to date
  • review the eight recommended pilot locations and provide feedback
  • let us know if you are interested in becoming an Off-Leash Dog Area Steward to help move one of the recommended pilot locations forward
Providing feedback through this online self-directed workshop should only take about 16 minutes to complete and will be open until Aug. 31, 2020.
