U.S. Match Racing Championship (USMRC) Female Participation Survey

Request for input on a proposal to require “at least one female on each team in the U.S. Match Racing Championship (USMRC) and its Qualifiers”

The U.S. Match Racing Championships Committee (USMRCC) organizes the Open, Women’s and Youth match racing qualifiers and national championships and will vote on this proposal on December 7, 2021. Please respond by Sunday, November 28, 2021, so the US Sailing Match Racing Committee, which is meeting on December 1, 2021, and the US Sailing Match Racing Championships Committee can take your thoughts and experience into consideration prior to voting on this proposal.

A similar but different proposal was made in 2016 and was not implemented at that time based in part on a survey’s results, so your responses are very important.

This proposal is in line with the global effort to increase opportunities for women to compete at the highest levels of the sport, including the Olympics and the Volvo Ocean Race. The Intercollegiate Match Racing Championship currently requires at least one female be on each team, as does the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship (USYMRC) and the Youth Match Racing World Championship..

World Sailing grades match racing events. It also sets the maximum weight allowed based on the minimum number of crew permitted x 87.5 kg or 193 pounds. That means that if teams are permitted to sail with 3 or 4, then the total max weight is 579 pounds. For teams of 4 or 5, the max weight is 772 pounds. Over several years we have asked the World Sailing Match Racing Committee to address weight limits for mixed events and as of today they have not modified the grading requirements.

We encourage you to fill out the brief survey below and provide additional comments at the end.
