The Southeast Colorado Region consisting of Baca County, Bent County, Crowley County, Kiowa County, Otero County, and Prowers County is currently developing the update of the Southeast Colorado Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan Update. The Region is seeking input from the public to ensure the Hazard Mitigation Plan reflects community priorities to protect people, property, and the environment. This survey is designed to gather information regarding natural and man-made hazard risks within the Region to help guide the development and implementation of the Hazard Mitigation Plan.
Hazard mitigation planning reduces loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with regional, state, and local governments identifying natural disaster risks and vulnerabilities that are common in their area. After identifying risks, long-term strategies are developed to focus on protecting people and property from similar events.
The Southeast Colorado Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan will analyze the Region’s vulnerabilities to all hazards including natural and human caused, and will identify proactive mitigation actions that can be taken to minimize impacts to people, property, and critical facilities.
Natural hazards (earthquakes, floods, hurricanes) are caused by natural environmental forces and weather, while man-made or human caused hazards (transportation incidents, cyber-attacks) result from human intent, negligence, or error.
