Introduction

WHAT DO *YOU* WANT AT THE GRAVENHURST PUBLIC LIBRARY?

The Gravenhurst Public Library wants to hear from you!

We’re beginning the process of envisioning what a 21st Century library service and facility should look like for the community of Gravenhurst to inform our strategies. We’re starting by reaching out to you about what you want in a library and how to make the library as useful as possible to the residents, students, and businesses in Gravenhurst.

If you have a moment, please fill out our survey, available online. The survey will take 10-12 minutes to complete and is open until  March 31, 2017.

Bonus! Thank you for sharing your answers with us. If you'd like to be entered into a draw for a prize of a Garmin Smartwatch (first), iGlow Bluetooth Speaker (second), or a Chapters Gift Card (third), please share your e-mail address with us in the last question.

Thank you all so very much for your help and for your continued support of the library!

Additional Background

The Gravenhurst Public Library provides the Gravenhurst community with excellence in library service by anticipating and responding to the changing library and information needs of the community, by serving all members of the community and by generating pride in the Library. The Library is comprised of a single main location and also provides a repository of local heritage through the Gravenhurst Archives.

We offer the traditional and much loved library services that the community expects, such as strong book, movie, magazine, large print, and music collections, with an emphasis on programming for all ages. We also offer technology based services, such as downloadable content (eBooks, eAudio, and databases), free WiFi and computer use, and digital reference services.

In 2016, there were 67,000 in person visits made to Gravenhurst Library and 335 digital daily visits were also made to our Library. 93,707 items were borrowed by Gravenhurst cardholders throughout the year. Gravenhurst currently has over 5,000 active members, with over 8,900 people attending 592 free programs offered in 2016.

The Gravenhurst Public Library now serves a population of 12,311 residents with 8,000 square feet of space available in our library. Current library design guidelines suggest that a library should have one square foot of space for each person in the community. By those standards, our Library has only 65% of the space it currently needs without considering future growth in our community. (That said, there are new ways to deliver programs and collections – both in person and digitally.)

However, the Gravenhurst Public Library may be at risk to adequately provide all of the services a library should, due to facilities that cannot support the size and diversity of our community’s needs, and the 21st century’s ever changing information landscape. Now is the time to initiate the research on community needs and start planning for change and to explore our options over the coming decades.

We appreciate you taking the time to please fill out this survey to share your thoughts with us. Survey closes on March 31, 2017.
