Chickerell Community Library Survey

Introduction

Last year, Chickerell Town Council carried out a community survey to understand where residents feel the Council’s investment and attention should be focused. An extension to the Community Library was identified as a priority, coming second overall.

The Friends of Chickerell Community Library (FoCCL), the volunteer group who run the library, have developed a proposal for a small extension to the Peto Memorial building to improve the facilities. The plans include a public accessible toilet, improved emergency exits, a larger kitchenette, additional storage and useable space that could offer greater privacy. The proposed plans can be viewed here Proposed Library Extension Plans.

Chickerell Town Council currently leases the building to FoCCL and is considering whether to grant permission for FoCCL to submit a planning application for the extension.

The estimated cost of the extension is at least £300,000, which would need to be raised through fundraising by FoCCL. The Town Council is responsible for maintaining the exterior of the building, and any ongoing maintenance costs associated with the exterior of the extension would be met by the Council. These costs would be funded through the precept (this is the Town Council’s share of your council tax).
