Welcome to the Department for Environment and Water consultation survey about how we can best restore and revitalise the Coorong region in South Australia.

Your opinions and ideas will help shape future planning for breathing new life into this national icon.

The survey focuses on checking with you that we have the right vision and priorities. Giving us your thoughts at this early stage will help ensure that work to support the Coorong reflects community values and aspirations.

We ask you to identify yourself as part of the survey as it is important that we understand the source of the input, and to seek clarification if needed. Be assured your feedback and details will be kept confidential for internal purposes only in keeping with the South Australian Government's Information Privacy Principles.  Thank you for participating

Please fill the survey by Thursday 31 October 2019.

Question Title

* 1. What is your name and, if relevant, the name of your business or organisation?

Question Title

* 2. Which of the following best describes your interest in the Coorong? (select all that apply)

Question Title

* 3. The Action Plan contains a working vision for managing the Coorong for ecological health.  It is 'The Coorong should be a healthy, productive and resilient wetland system that maintains its international significance'.

This would include:
  • Filamentous algae is reduced to manageable levels, allowing for expanded distribution and improved health of aquatic plant meadows.
  • Fish and bird communities are healthy and thriving.
  • Water quality and environmental outcomes improve as a result of optimised water delivery to the Coorong.
  • First Nations and local communities are empowered and engaged in managing the Coorong.
Do you think this is the right vision for managing the Coorong for ecological health?

Question Title

* 4. The Action Plan proposes short and long-term priorities for restoring and revitalising the Coorong. Please tell us how strongly you agree or disagree with the following priorities for on-ground works that will address immediate threats to the Coorong.

Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree
Restoration of priority aquatic plants that provide habitat and a food source for fish and waterbirds
Physical removal of problematic filamentous algae
Enhanced management and/or restoration of wetland habitat within the Coorong and Lower Lakes region, and potentially the South East, to provide an immediate refuge for Coorong waterbird species
Modifications to irrigation system offtakes between Lock 1 and the barrages that enhance operational flexibility for the delivery of environmental water to the Coorong.

Question Title

* 5. Please tell us how strongly you agree or disagree with the following priorities for scientific trials and investigations to fill gaps in knowledge.

Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree
Reduce nutrient loads and algae abundance in the Coorong
Switch the South Lagoon back to an aquatic plant dominated system rather than an algal dominated system
Provide the food resources that are required to support waterbirds and fish populations
Increase the abundance and distribution of waterbird populations at local and regional scales within the Coorong
Identify the adaptation pathways that are required to ensure that the ecological values of the Coorong are maintained into the future under a changing climate

Question Title

* 6. Please tell us how strongly you agree or disagree with the following priorities for optimising water resources in the Coorong. These will ensure that water intended to restore the Coorong ecological values is able to achieve its intended purpose, and water is used efficiently and effectively.

Strongly Agree Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly Disagree
Developing a hydrological forecasting model to enable short and long-range scenario testing
Developing a management action database to coordinate the storage and retrieval of vital water management information
Targeted monitoring of water quality samples
Improvements to existing Coorong monitoring stations
Coorong water flow gauging and depth assessments

Question Title

* 7. Please tell us how strongly you agree or disagree with the following priorities for investigating long-term infrastructure options to feasibility assessment stage as listed below. The following are measures that can manipulate water flows and levels to the Coorong.

Strongly disagree Disagree Neutral Agree Strongly Agree
A connecting pipe or channel between Lake Albert and the Coorong to improve environmental water delivery to the Coorong
Improvements to connectivity between the North and South Lagoons and the Lower Lakes
Options to maintain an open Murray Mouth, mitigate the need for dredging and provide greater seawater exchange with the Coorong
Augmenting the South East Flows Restoration Project with additional water from the South East that currently flows out to sea
Options to regulate and maintain water levels in the Coorong South Lagoon

Question Title

* 8. Please tell us any other general thoughts or ideas you have about restoring and revitalising the Coorong.

Question Title

* 9. Would you like to stay informed about upcoming voluntary opportunities for the community?

Question Title

* 10. If Yes to the last question, please nominate which in the list below may interest you (select all that apply) and we will be in touch with opportunities.
