You are being invited to participate in a survey intended for library staff in school, academic, special, and public libraries, who have any responsibility for, or involvement in, purchasing materials for their collections. The purpose of this survey is to determine whether specific internal or external factors affect purchase decisions in Illinois libraries.  The deadline for completing the survey is March 24, 2017. It should take no more than 15 minutes to answer the questions.

While as a profession we recognize threats to intellectual freedom in the form of book challenges, it is more difficult to recognize the role that we may play in creating barriers to access. Through the survey, we hope to create greater awareness of the potential for inadvertent self-censorship, and to identify ways in which the Illinois Library Association may support you in maintaining the tenets of intellectual freedom.

We want to acknowledge and thank Dr. Wendy Rickman, Assistant Professor, Leadership Studies, University of Central Arkansas for allowing us to adapt her survey, which focused on school libraries, and Dr. Emily Knox, Assistant Professor, School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois for her guidance in doing so.

Your participation is voluntary which means you can choose whether or not you want to participate and withdraw at any time. Participation in this survey should provide you with minimal discomfort, if any. Once you begin, you will not be able to save your answers and return.  Your responses are confidential, and we appreciate your honest answers to the questions.

If you have any questions, you may contact Nancy Kim Phillips at

Thank you for participation! We look forward to sharing the results of the survey in late 2017.
