Colchester Exit 17 Project

[Colchester NH 028-1(31)]

End of 2025 Construction Season Survey

The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) is improving the interchange at Interstate 89 (I-89) Exit 17 and the Chimney Corner intersection of U.S. Route 2 (U.S. 2) and U.S. Route 7 (U.S. 7) to enhance safety and mobility in Colchester, VT, as part of the Colchester NH 028-1(31) Project.

During the second construction season from late March to December 2025, crews reconstructed U.S. 2 along its new alignment, built and opened the new U.S. 2 bridge over I-89 on August 21, 2025, and demolished the existing bridge. Crews constructed the new southbound off-ramp and on-ramp from U.S. 2 westbound with an acceleration lane and reconstructed the northbound on-and-off-ramps and deceleration lane at Exit 17. The Chimney Corner intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 was widened and reconstructed to accommodate additional turning lanes, with new traffic signals installed. Roadway improvements included milling, paving, and line striping on I-89 near Exit 17, the Exit 17 ramps, and sections of U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 within the project limits. Additional work involved installing new traffic signals at the Exit 17 ramp intersections with U.S. 2, implementing erosion protection and sediment control measures such as media filter drains and gravel wetland treatment, and completing landscaping and sign installation.

Work was completed Sunday through Friday during daytime and nighttime hours, under single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 and single-lane closures on I-89 at Exit 17 during non-peak commute times. U.S. 2 bridge construction and demolition required a limited number of nighttime full interstate closures with detour routes. Exit 17 southbound and northbound ramp construction required a limited number of nighttime ramp closures with detour routes. For a broader project overview, please visit the project website.

The Project Team is seeking your feedback on construction impacts and outreach efforts in 2025 to improve communication and satisfaction for the remainder of the project. Construction will resume in spring 2026 and is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

The survey is anonymous, and questions asked in the comments section will not receive a response. If you have a question, please email the project’s Public Information Team at info@colchesterExit17.com.

We appreciate your feedback!
