The Value of the Third Sector (Gwent)

Torfaen Voluntary Alliance (TVA) and Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO) are the two county voluntary councils representing and supporting the community and voluntary sector across Gwent. Both organisations work to strengthen the third sector, promote collaboration, and evidence the sector’s contribution to wellbeing and community resilience. TVA and GAVO have commissioned delivery of a one-off strategic project exploring and evidencing the value of the third sector in Gwent. The work will focus on early intervention, prevention, and cost avoidance for public services. This commission aligns with the priorities of the Gwent Regional Partnership Board (RPB) and supports regional efforts to evidence and strengthen the preventative value of comunity-based services. The findings will help inform future commissioning, policy, and investment decisions across Gwent.

Richard Newton Consulting Ltd has been appointed to undertake this work, which is intended to produce a robust, evidence-based understanding of the third sector’s contribution to community wellbeing and local economies. We would appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to complete the survey below, in confidence. All data is processed in line with the privacy policy of GAVO. Should you wish to speak to a member of the research team please email admin@richard-newton.co.uk

1.The 'Third Sector' is a term used by the Welsh Government as an inclusive and overarching description of a very diverse range of organisations that share a set of values and characteristics. It is widely accepted that Third Sector organisations are:

• independent, non-governmental bodies;
• established voluntarily by people who choose to organise themselves;
• ‘value-driven’ and motivated by social, cultural or environmental objectives, rather than simply to make a profit;
• committed to reinvesting their surpluses to further their social aims and for the benefit of people and communities in Wales.
