Introduction
ARMA is seeking to understand how the research management and administration community is using, not using, or considering using artificial intelligence (AI) in their work. We want to hear from both those who currently use AI tools and those who do not. The survey will explore current practice, levels of access to approved tools, confidence, concerns, support needs and how ARMA can help the community use AI responsibly, confidently and effectively. The findings will inform future ARMA guidance, training, resources, events and member engagement activities.
The survey is open to both ARMA members and non-members, who are working for organisations such as universities/higher education institutions, research institutes, independent research organisations, public sector research establishments, research funders, government departments, NHS Bodies, Catapult centres, independent research management consultants and charitable organisations, including Trusts and Foundations. We welcome views from all career stages and from all UK nations, so please share with your networks and colleagues working in research management and administration.
In this survey, “AI tools” refers to a broad range of technologies that use artificial intelligence to support work tasks, including general-purpose tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot, AI features embedded within systems like Microsoft 365 or Teams, and specialist platforms used for funding discovery, compliance or analytics. This also includes emerging applications such as workflow automation and AI-assisted data insights, where AI supports or enhances processes rather than being used as a standalone tool.

The results will only be accessible to ARMA staff, as well as the ARMA AI Working Group for further work related to planned focus group sessions and a final report for the Member Engagement Committee. Any identifiable information will be anonymised during data processing.
